Paradise Lost 004
On the 12th and 13th of April, we held the inaugural exhibition of the Paradise Lost research program in our exhibition space HILS / Chillzone.
The very opposition of "vernacular" to "modern" does not make sense. There is something misaligned with the thought that these ought to be placed in some sort of opposition. If vernacular means "native", or of the home - individ- ual, why is it in opposition to modern - "present" or "just now". These concepts have nothing to do with each other. The former is geographical, while the other is temporal.
Joshua Hoogeboom-Noya's ongoing photographic research project, Paradise Lost, is motivated by the questions: "Why does it need to be one or the other?"; "Why does one thing need to be lesser than another?" This exhibi- tion, presenting the work from his 4th research installment, goes deeper into the idea of experience, and the role of sympathy and empathy of the viewer.
